Great Scott - Marty McFly Nike Sneakers a Reality

Now this is cool! Doing the after holiday blog rounds last night, I stumbled across the Nike Mag 2011. The self-lacing sneakers Marty McFly dons in the 1989 Back To The Future sequel are now available for limited purchase. 1,500 pairs are being auctioned off for around $3,000 each, hoping to raise $100 million for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s. Nike’s main sneaker man, Tinker Hatfield (featured on F&W a few weeks ago), was behind the original collaboration with the films production team.

Cool Hunting has an excellent article on the project, also check out the official Ebay page. Happy bidding!

The Nike Swoosh - 40 years on

In 1971, Portland State University student Carolyn Davidson was asked to create a shoe mark for $35. Fast forward 40 years and this mark, known as the ‘swoosh’ is now one of the most powerful and well known logos across the world. To mark this achievement DNA (Department of Nike Archives) have put together a 28 page book charting its history. The book includes never before seen photos and images, along with interviews from those who witnessed the remarkable birth of Nike.

As a massive fan of Nike’s work from a creative and design perspective, I would love to get my hands on this book. Sadly the book is not yet available to the general public but several extracts and images can be viewed above. Thanks to @dudleywild for the tip off.

Sneakers + Design

As a bit of a sneaker nut I love these little videos exploring the design process. Tinker Hatfield is a major player for Nike. Originally hired as an architect he soon turned his hand to trainer design, producing a number of classics including the Air Max 1.
