The aim of the site is to provide a canvas for a range of people working in creative industries in London to use for posting their thoughts, ideas, recent projects etc, with a wide creative audience and without the pressure of being the owner or sole contributor to the blog.

We’ve already had some great posts from our first few contributors from across a spectrum of creative industries, so come and have a look.

You can check out the new site here: www.shoptalklondon.com And follow us on Twitter here: www.twitter.com/shoptalklondon

Read into this as much as you like - maybe babies have always just hit and grabbed things naturally, not necessarily expecting anything to happen when they do. Or maybe having now grown up reading and playing learning games on iPads they intrinsically expect ‘pages’ to react to being touched and manipulated.

An entertaining 1 min 26 s either way.

Architect and good friend of F&W, Joe Haire, was recently selected as one of BD’s Class of 2011. Joe graduated back in June and has just secured his part 2 at award winning London architecture practice AHMM.

Now I’m no architect, but his final year project is extremely impressive. Combining traditional architecture methods with modern data calculation he designed a new concept for building projects.

In Joe’s words:

Designing for 6000 residents individually would be a monumental task and therefore a code was written, based on earlier research into cybernetics, that would actively distribute form, programme and services to the specification of the required demographic of the community and within the constraints of the site. The code is therefore an endlessly flexible modeling tool for complete retirement communities.

Selected images above. Be sure to view more of Joe’s work and images here.

It occurred to me, in the last couple of weeks of work especially, how important it is to get outside. When work starts piling up and time seems to disappear as you get towards the business end of any marketing/advertising campaign, you need to maintain the same clear head you had at its inception.

So much time and effort from so many people goes into concepting a beautiful piece that answers a brilliant insight. But with deadlines looming it’s so easy to forget this and ‘just get things out the door’.

In these situations it’s also very easy to stay in the office, focus on the laptop, the phone, the mac, and internal issues. But if you make yourself take 10, go outside, take a wander away from the office bubble, you remember that some of these people around you are the ones you’re producing the work for. They don’t understand the agency jargon, aren’t affected by the agency’s or client’s internal pressures, so the work ideally shouldn’t be affected by these either.

You have to go back to the thinking at the beginning of the project, and stay true to that, as that’s what will produce creative that your audience will interactive with, and ultimately that’s what gets you the client’s respect.

Easier to write than to do!

Every designer is familiar with the work of London & New York based agency The Partners. They have a long list of high profile clients and projects. It’s nice to see that they still find time to be a little creative in-house. Featured on FormFiftyFive a few weeks ago, they released some shots of their rather clever Summer BBQ posters.
Very proud to be part of the success of the Own A Colour campaign from Unicef & Dulux. I’ve been working on the project with my agency Feed for the last couple of months, and Thursday saw the global launch in Rome - with over £50k raised in one day. The idea is to sell 16.7m colours for at least £1 with all proceeds going to children’s charity Unicef. We’ve already picked up some great feedback and coverage, including Creative Review & Wired.

Mexican design agencies are getting a lot of publicity these days - and it’s obvious why. Similar to the Studio Savvy (posted on F&W a few months ago), Anagrama have a fine body of work. Stand out pieces include Micheline & Al Fresco (selected images above).

Earlier this week Facebook...

Hello new facebook, goodbye google+?

Earlier this week Facebook announced their latest concept, Timeline, a way to ‘Tell your life story with a new kind of profile’. First impressions - I like it. It made looking back through years of photos/posts/shares easier and far more enjoyable. I can definitely see people responding well to it, after the initial ‘I hate change’ backlash. But what does this mean for Google+? As Ferry posted a few weeks ago, he can’t find a place for Google+ - is this one more nail in the coffin?

It’s also interesting to see some of the new creative work from Facebook. Back in April it was revealed that Nicholas Feltron & Ryan Case, the data design duo behind the new wave of everyday states and numbers (Feltron reports, Daytum), had joined the staff at Facebook. This followed the hiring of Ji Lee (from Google Labs) to become Facebook’s first creative director. Visually, Timeline looks a lot slicker and defiantly has a Feltron feel to it. We see how I get on over the next few days.

For more information check out these excellent articles - TheFoxisblack & BBC.

To get on board before the official launch next week click here.

Although I’ve seen a number of Jeremy Saunders film posters before, I had know idea he was behind so many classics (thanks to thefoxisblack). His portfolio showcases a cracking selection of executions, from illustration to hand drawn type. Instead of me rambling on, I’ve taken this lovely paragraph of copy from his website:

“It’s still my ambition to inspire in the viewer that same sense of excitement or intrigue that I felt lying on my bedroom floor leafing through monochrome advertisements: that need to discover precisely what feelings, ideas or emotions the key art represents, what treats and surprises are in store when the viewer steps into the darkened auditorium. For me cinema is still the most magical of mediums; having the opportunity to work with filmmakers and compressing their ideas into a single, reductive, seductive image is a dream come true.”

Rosario Florio is a graphic designer hailing from St. Gallen, Switzerland. You may have spotted bits of her work on various typographic blogs. Rosaria has a wonderful Swiss design style to her work. Like many great Swiss designers, her portfolio showcases precision, technical craft and an attention to detail that has been the bench mark of Swiss design for years. Typographically, there is a subtlety and quietness to the work - enhanced by the considered use of white space and leading. It really is a lesson in beautiful typography.

As always a few of my favourite images are above. And be sure to check out her full website here.

I’ve only recently come across the work of Kyle Bean, when he was asked to create the wonderful pop-up card for The Design Museum. The project, a bit of a blog favourite, aims to promote their imminent move to the former Commonwealth Institute that will house the museum from 2014. (Check out the video to see the card in full working glory.)

Kyle is a Brighton based designer specialising in hand crafted models, set design and art direction. His work has been used across window displays, installations and advertising, and has a real warmth and natural charm to it.

View his full portfolio here. Selected images above.

Innovative use of traditional ambient media - I found this on Tottenham Court Rd and gave it a go. I like the standout it has and the interactivity it encourages in a spot where by definition you’re killing time and waiting. To be honest I wasn’t really sure how I was ‘joining the party’ - it seems nothing really happens once you’ve taken the photo next to the two characters. A good idea - but not great execution.

Yet another example of Fosters really cashing in on the great recognition that their 2 Aussie character’s Brad and Dan are getting for launching their new product.

The last month or so of cinema has been pretty uninspiring. After the good and bad from the summer blockbuster season, the end of September brings a calm to cinema - a chance to breathe and step back into a more thought provoking and story driven time. That’s not to say we can expect period dramas and rom-coms, as the upcoming ‘Drive’ (trailer above) promises to be an action/violence packed affair that doesn’t relinquish emotion or storyline.

Drive stars the understated king of cool Ryan Gosling as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire. Romance, corruption and violence descend, as all hell breaks loose. Already receiving critical acclaim, and a impressive 92% on rotten tomatoes, lets hope it lives up to the billing.

I can’t remember when I first heard about Leeds based design agency Golden, but it was well over a year ago. More importantly I’d never seen any of their work - until now. September Industry (design blog/journal) have been granted rare access to a selection of their new work, and it’s well worth the wait!

Their portfolio demonstrates a fine range of executions, that is bold and refreshing. Standout favourites include projects for Redblue Research (ingenious colour choice) and Music Balloon (visually stunning) - images above.

They’ve also answered one of my age old questions - whats going on with their website?

“The website – it’s just not a tactile channel for us, so therefore we wanted to do something that we enjoyed, that we liked,” says Carolan. “It was great fun to do, it looked great, and it’s got a great track over the top. It is just 90 seconds of us. If you like it get in touch, if not, drink up.”

50 and 50 is a curated project that attempts to create an illustrated new way of looking at the USA. The project asks 50 designers, 1 per state, to illustrate their state motto. Created by Dan Cassaro, a designer & animator from Brooklyn.

The site boasts a fine collection of illustrations. Some solid typographic treatments on show. A few of my favourites are above.

Bit of a detour from our regular posting but I’m loving this Macklemore X Ryan Lewis ‘Otherside’ remix featuring Fences. Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) is a hip hop artist hailing from Seattle, Washington. His most notorious work is produced by Ryan Lewis. The critically claimed ‘Otherside’, which samples the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song of the same name, discusses his struggles with substance abuse.

Check out his facebook page for more details. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are currently working on their first full-length album which will be out later this year.

Nice little video too!

Over the last couple of years I’ve fallen in love with cooking. I’m no Raymond Blanc, but I try. My stocking fillers these days tend to be knives, graters and spices. So when I discovered this breakfast blog I was extremely excited. Unlike other recipe sites, BKFST presents each recipe as a mouth watering photo - far more enticing!

Already a big fan of the ‘treaty’ weekend breakfast (more brunch), this website is firmly routed in my favourites. Last weekend I tried out the Avocado Eggs Benedict - insane!
